Melanie The Witch Series
So I took Melanie into Nanowrimo for the month of November and more parts came out, this is where we left off even though the chapter names are different. I hope you all continue to enjoy Melanie as much as I like writing her.
Chapter
19 Lucious & Melanie
Melanie
and her mother buried grandma in a cemetery in town where all their family
rested. They had dressed her in a beautiful simple, white dress, and a white
light seemed to emanate from her body. Lucious was in his great grandmother's heart even after she was gone
from this earth. The service was quiet and just them three. Grandma would be
greatly missed. Each of their hearts ached for the return of grandma to the cottage but knew it would not come. Evil had
killed her and there was no returning from that. Gerd pushed all her hatred and
vengeance into grandma. The only thing
that saved her for a moment was Lucious light. She would be missed and now the
family line was missing a powerful protector of
their family. Someone would have to take over and Melanie thought it would be
her own mother.
The
family; her mom, she, and Lucious went out to celebrate grandma’s life after
the burial. They went to a local pub and talked about grandma’s great
accomplishments. One of the townsfolk heard them talking and said he knew her
back in the day. They had been childhood friends and he did not know about her
powers, but always felt she was special. This town had suffered from darkness
for centuries while Gerd was around. She toyed with their hearts, their wives,
and their children. She took who she wanted and when she wanted them. Those
minions used to be humans who lived in this town. The town had suffered enough
and was happy to hear of Gerd’s final demise. They were skeptical but prayed she was gone for good. The Kellyn women were a
strong Irish witch line and if anyone could destroy her the town’s folk knew it
was Melanie and her family. They thanked everyone in the town and went out for
a walk. Lucious toddled behind them.
Melanie
and her mom talked about grandma some more and then Melanie’s mom said that she
would not be taking over as the protector of
the family. Melanie looked surprised. Her eyes darted around and looked at her
and her mom. Her mom said no you are not going to be it either. Melanie stopped
walking and just gazed at her mom.
“Mom,” she said,
“We need a person to watch over us, we need a protector, and it is just you and
it is just me!”
Melanie’s
mom looked past Melanie and looked at toddler Lucious. Melanie said, “Mom you
have got to be kidding me, he is so tiny, and yes he has a way with him and
appears to be magical too, but he cannot protect this family.”
Melanie’s
mom rested her hand on her daughter's
shoulder and assured her that with her help Lucious could and will protect the
family from harm. Melanie looked astonished at her child. How could someone so
small protect them? She would have to instruct him. He looked up at her and put
his arms up to be picked up. She knelt down and picked up her little one. She
held him tight and he whispered: “It will
all be ok mommy” and kissed him on the cheek. He then wiggled to get free and
ran and ran through the countryside hills and enjoyed his childhood a little
bit more. He seemed to know the weight that was being placed on him and he was
content. At such a young age he was ready to take on the Kellyn women and
protect his grandmother and mother, but Melanie could not help but think “What
could a toddler really do?”
Chapter 20 Returning Home
Melanie
had studied witchcraft, mastered it all, and was ready to head back to her
home. Melanie’s mom stayed to help pack up the cottage. They packed all their
belongings up, but then they pulled up a floorboard
that only the witch line knew about, added their story of destroying Gerd to
the leather journal that was under the floorboard, and placed it so that
perhaps when Lucious was old enough and battling his own dark forces that he
could write it in too. All three walked around the cottage one last time.
Melanie was really going to miss this place, but she could feel a shift in it
since Gerd was dead. It was no longer her safe place, but a rental again. A
normal person would rent it, perhaps to sit in it and write a novel, she had no
idea, but it was no longer hers. She packed up the car they rented with all
their belongings and headed toward the airport. It was going to be a long eight
to nine-hour flight home. Each of them
was mentally and physically spent. They climbed on board the plane and sank
deeply into their seats. After takeoff, all three of them fell into a much
needed restorative sleep. The next time they landed it would be on American
soil and they would all be happy to be home. They talked about grandma not
returning with them, but they knew she was watching over them. She was in the
clouds outside the plane, she was in the sunbeams
raining down on them as they flew home, and was always in their heart and
blood. They might be one Kellyn woman short, but they were raising a Kellyn
male witch and they were so rare. Melanie put a protection spell over Lucious
because she knew someone or thing would come after him. She was his guardian as
his mother, but also a witch protecting an aspiring male witch. He would need
to be strong and gracious. He would need to lead others by example, and he
would need to watch over his mother and grandmother. Melanie knew when she gave
birth to him that he fiancé would love him, she wasn’t so sure her fiancé would
have understood the magic that pulsates
in him.
Upon
landing, Melanie studied her mom’s face.
She had witnessed some dark items over the years and Melanie wanted to ask what
her mom had seen but did not want to
bring back harsh memories fresh to her mind. Her mom saw her looking at her and
smiled. She said, “It is good to be
home.” They bother gathered their belongings and scooped up sleepy Lucious and
headed off the plane. Each of them said a private protection spell over the
plane so that the next group would arrive safely. At the end of the runway, their said their
goodbyes. Melanie’s mom had to catch another plane. She was off again to head
back to her own home. Melanie looked sad. She thought perhaps her mom would
want to come stay with them, but she told Melanie that she needed to get back
to a normal life and so did her and Lucious. They hugged for a few minutes and
then Melanie’s mom picked up Lucious and danced around with him as he smiled
and giggled. She was going to miss this sweet, handsome, little guy. She said
to him “You are our protector now, do not let us down.” Right on cue, he said,
“I won’t grandma, I got your love in my
heart.” She knew the family was in good hands. This little boy had light in his
heart, he had love in his heart, and he held his family high up, she knew he
would protector her if ever she needed him too. They all hugged and kissed
again and Melanie’s mom walked off and waved one last time. Melanie got Lucious
into his stroller and they headed toward luggage and then next were home.
Once
they were finally home the weight of all that happened hit Melanie. She dropped
all their belongings in the entrance way. Griffin again appeared and Melanie
thought, “Shit did I leave you in Ireland?” He just rubbed her leg, begged for
treats, gave up, and finally went to lay down in his bed by the hearth. He
travels on his own time she thought. She grabbed Lucious up and nuzzled his
neck. He smelled so yummy, but Melanie decided he could use a bath and then so
could she. She walked the hall to the bathroom and filled the tub with lavender
oil and water. She hung a bunch of lavender under the running water as well.
The room filled up with the aroma of lavender and Lucious knew he was home.
Melanie undressed him and helped him plop into the warm aroma filled the bath. He washed with her help and then he
played a little bit. He was still sleepy and now jet lagged. If he went to bed
now he would be off in his sleep times,
but she also wanted a bath and bed. She lifted him out of the tub and dried him
off. She put on his pj’s and he brushed his teeth. She walked him down the hall
to his room. It was just as he left it. Toys all over his floor, laundry still
bounding out of his hamper, bed unmade. They had left and Melanie had too much
on her mind to worry about their home. He looked pleased that everything was
the same; she tucked him into bed with a kiss
and headed out of his room. She looked back and noticed a white light under his
doorway. She walked back to it and a small white light was coming out of his
heart. He was pure magic and light and her pride and joy.
Melanie
went to her bathroom and again filled the tub with oils. This time she used
patchouli and a little peppermint. She wanted to relax but remain awake for a
while. She undressed and slide into her water in the tub. The essential oils
relaxed her, but the sobs broke forth like a broken water pipe. Her heart ached
for her grandmother. She yearned to call her, to discuss the light coming out
of Lucious, and about her return trip home, but grandma was gone. She sobbed
for all the pain she held inside. Grandma was gone, mom did not want to be the
protector, and her toddler son was in for some immense training once he got old
enough. She began to relax in the tub; Griffin came in and lay on the bathmat.
He watched her for a minute and then dozed off again.
After
her bath, Melanie sat on the couch. She
had canceled their cable due to being
gone for lord knows how long it was going to be. She just sat on the couch. The
birdcage sits lifeless in the corner. Her washed dishes still needed to be put
up from before she left, but she could just sit on the couch. In front of her
sits her fiancé's guitar. She just
observed it sitting there. It seemed to be taking her in as well. She would
need to tell James that she was back, but perhaps she needed to unwind from
this trip first. She was so entangled in the magic, the light, and the death of
grandma that she decided she needed time. Then a quiet knock came to her door and she knew it was James. She
had called to let him know her return flight just in case something happened,
but now here he was at her door. He knocked again, “Melanie, it’s me, James. Are you awake?” Melanie thought for
a moment that she hadn’t made a peep and perhaps he thought she was sleeping,
but she decided to open the door. He looked as great as he always had with that
stubble of beard and all. He had flowers for her and came in slowly and nuzzled
her. Her anxiety melted as she asked him to come in. They kissed passionately
and they sat on the couch and just held hands until morning. James understood
without her saying a word that she needed him there, but not in her thoughts
right now. He was willing to wait for her to tell him all about the journey.
She had told him she was a witch, a good witch, but she had not told him that
her best friend’s child was also a witch. She was not so sure that he could
handle any more news like that right now.
So she waited and they just held hands.
