Writing Time

Writing is very time consuming. First we must clean the house, make meals, get some tea, charge the laptop or find a pen. Writing takes time because we have a process. We do not just grab our writing tool and start, no we light a candle, we get into a comfy chair and have lots of light. We find an outlet. We form a ritual in which we find ourselves creatively writing. We need all our things in the right place. Most of us writers have a place we love to write. Sometimes it is a coffee house, sometimes a chair, but whatever it is, writing is time consuming.

Many famous writers have said you need to do 30 min each morning, but what if you are a night person? They have also said have no distractions, but some of us like music playing while we write. People have told us how to write well, better, longer and whatever else for years. We do not have to follow their advice. I know one author who wrote a book thinking no one would ever publish it. Well it was published and turned into a movie! Follow what works for you. Do your own thing! Let no one tell you that you are doing it wrong. That you do not have what it takes. They have their opinions but so do you.

Following Vs. Leading. We can choose to follow our favorite authors writing style, ritual, or time schedule for writing. We can follow another authors way to publication. We can follow anyone and everyone including our friends who are writers. We can follow them all if we want to go nuts. Leading your own way though, now that is something. Blazing your own path. Knocking through publications walls. If you are an indie author or go the traditional way, lead your own path. Do what makes you comfortable and not what others have told you to do. Submit your work to places you want to, writer for your audience, not who your friends say to write to, and always follow your heart. Your heart in all of these situations will lead you down the right path.

Recently I have had a friend tell me I am wasting my time submitting to a certain magazine. She thinks they are a niche and they only publish certain peoples works. Well I will keep submitting. I will submit until I am in this publication because I know once I am they will let me keep writing for them. I will also submit to other publications. As of right now I write for three online places and I want to write for more. I want my words to carry weight on their wings and fly to as many places as they are capable of.  Writing for me is a journey through publication life. The more the better!

Writing is time consuming because you write, you edit, you revise. It takes time to get those words down in the correct order and it takes time to get out of your head the perfect way you hear it in your head to begin with. Writing a sentence takes a few minutes. Writing it well, well that takes a lot longer. As writers we want people to read our work and connect. We want to touch their souls and let them feel the warmth of our characters. Writing takes time, words sometimes do not flow, sometimes we are stuck as if we are in quicksand. Writing is a process and it is our process. Listen to everyone's advice and let it wash over you. Take what you want, leave what you don't and move forward in your writing process. Lead your own way into the story you are creating for the readers.Look at what you want to say and how you want to say it. Take heart in knowing you are not alone though you write alone. Know us other writers are here if you need help.

Now, go write! Even a few sentences is better than nothing. Have a great writing day!
