Holiday Hum Bugs

It is another holiday season and not all of us are jingling all the way. Some of us are struggling to pay bills, others have no food in their fridge, while others of us are contemplating suicide. Yes the holiday hum bugs are upon us. It is the time of emotions getting away from us. Life seems like it should be a famous Christmas painting when indeed we are lucky to make it through the day. There is no life is a lemon, make lemonade. There is one breath, two, three, There is one step forward and try not to fall back and land like a pancake.

The holiday season starts with Halloween and we are okay, then thanksgiving hits and we realize this is going to be harder then we thought. Christmas hits us like a pyramid fell on our heads. We start with oh candy, ooooh candy half off, we move to not enough money for turkey or no one to share the holidays with, Christmas comes around. The season of Christ. We sit in our homes and depression slams us down. We try to connect with others, but our emotions are off and rolling. Mental health does not take a holiday. It does not give you a pass through the holiday season. Life is tough and at this time of year its gets tougher and the hum bugs settle in to stay.

New years is a new beginning. It is a promise of new adventures, a new chance to make friends, find a job, achieve something. Live large and do all you did not the year before. You are the cusp of your dreams coming true. You buck up for a day or two, you try to achieve new things, you might even join a group of some sort and then you crash back down with the hum bugs and struggle to shower daily, wash your hair, or eat some food. Life, which a moment ago was going to change huge for you in 2020, has crashed into you like a tidal wave and down down to the hum bugs you go. Life is miserable in a new year, woo hoo.

Mental health does not slide you slowly into the new year, no mental health only hid for a few moments for you to feel a false senses of accomplishment. The hum bugs have you tightly in their grip. Dealing with mental health issues takes up all your brain cells. Holidays are way to much and shut a lot of people down. I realize there are people dealing with depression and other mental health issues and I am not expert, but please seek professional help. Hum bugs are one thing, when you just really are not in the holiday mood, but real life depression where you haven't showered in weeks, haven't been outside the bed, or all together have given up, these are real and there is no shame in asking for help.

Hum bugs have no cure. Life is not happy all the time. Hum bugs have you held up in your home hiding from Christmas but if you can, call a friend to talk, share with someone what you are going through. Some people will pull away from you and that is okay. These are the people who think hum bugs are catching. These aren't second grade cooties people. This is your mental health sucking your energy out.

I hope the Hum bugs come and go for you. I pray you get the help you need. I wish you much holiday happiness.I wish you to be able to feel your head is above water. Take life a day at a time, take the holidays a little at a time. Relax, meditate, seek help. I hope the Hum bugs vacate you soon and that joy warms your heart this holiday season.

Happy Holiday Seasons from one Hum bug to another.
