Chapter 31 The Birdcage Sings

                Chapter 31 The Birdcage Sings

Upon Melanie and Lucious returning home; Melanie went right to the birdcage. She hadn’t even bothered to shut her front door. The birdcage was there. There was no mist, smell, or smoke in or around it. No stink of sulfur, no hissing, and nothing attempting to use it as a portal that was visible. Melanie purged it just in case. She also put a new protection spell on her, their home, and her son. Griffin came up to wrap around her leg. She had forgotten about him in all the chaos. She shut the front door and listened attentively; Griffin told a tale of the birdcage growling and howling. It had bumped around and rolled again on the floor, but now the cage was spotless inside and out. Griffin informed her that he did his own purging and cleaned the inside and outside after a puff of white light emitted from it for a second a few nights ago. Melanie nodded and they snuggled on the couch; Griffin, Melanie, & Lucious. They took a cat nap.

The next morning found them all snuggled up on the couch. They were all mentally exhausted and physically hurting from the couch. Griffin stretched, Melanie left Lucious on the couch to pet their cat and she went to get into a nice hot shower. She threw her bags on the bed and got out some clothes out of her bureau and started her shower. Lucious and Griffin came into her bedroom. Lucious said he just wanted to be near his mommy and he climbed into her bed while she showered. Griffin lay between the bedroom and bathroom guarding them both. He knew it had been a hellacious few days and he almost lost them both. He would have gone to them but he knew they were well protected by Melanie’s mom and all the witches. He had to remain to deal with the birdcage if the Fenrir came through.

Melanie got out of the shower and dried off. She walked into her bedroom and Griffin and Lucious were asleep on her bed snuggled up together. She knew Griffin would not be around forever, but she was so thankful for his love and attention that he showed Lucious. They were a tight-knit family and now she even had her mom close. She felt so truly blessed and at that moment someone knocked quietly on her from the door. Griffin looked up, sniffed and went back to sleep. Melanie walked to the door and it was Penelope and all the witches. All had returned and wanted to gather to place more protection spells on their home, their lives, and all of them. Gerd had vanished, but not back to the realm they vanquished her to. They did not know if she would return to wreak havoc or not, but having more protection than needed was a plus. They all sat quietly and looked at Melanie for guidance. She said this is an equal group and there is no leader, we decide things together, and they all nodded and began speaking one at a time. They talked about the atrocities they had seen over the decades, and they spoke of all the good witches they lost. They were happy Lucious was ok.

Melanie’s mom arrived and was not surprised to see the entire group here. Melanie’s home had a safe feel to it. All were welcomed. She put a pot of tea on the old-fashioned way. She put water in the teapot, placed it on the burner on the stove, turned on the gas and let the kettle heat. Not everything needed to be done by magic. Little by little her counter filled with foods. Each witch spelled a delicacy to share. When the tea was ready they all sat at the grand dining room table. There was so much food, they needed to do this more often. Each witch had a special talent like Lucious and Alice with the light, and Melanie was looking forward to learning about each witch’s family line and each families talents. After spending a delightful day in the house with all the witches they began to leave. Melanie had told them all about her silver box, she told them about her deceased fiancé, and she told them about her broom, her Griffin, and the magical magnifying glass. She still had items appear from time to time, but usually, it is her lost keys and nothing magical. She knew when she needed something magical it would appear again.

Melanie and her mom sat at the counter and looked at all that had to be cleaned up. Melanie said “No magic mom” and she got up and started loading the dishwasher. Melanie remembered there was a price for using magic and she would do her best not to attract attention to her with her magic. She would remain under the radar of evil and evil beings. She did not want to be a part of another battle, though she knew she would eventually be. She hoped her and her family would be intact for years to come, but she did not know. She would do her best to protect them. The witches had talked about banishing the birdcage, but Melanie just couldn’t do it. She did promise to alert them the second it did even a hiccup. It had been in this home for so long it was family too. Melanie played with Lucious the rest of the afternoon while her mom napped in the large black winged back chair. Her fiancé had teased her, when she moved in, that it looked like a chair for vampires. She smiled to see her mother sleeping in it. It really is a very comfy chair to snuggle up in. The fire was blazing in the hearth and everything was ok. Melanie did not know for how long, but right now, in this second, everything was ok!

And just like that things seem to be getting back into shape!!
