Melanie had not heard from Ryan in quite a while. She had pretty much chalked it up to all the drama and him wanting a drama free life. She woke this morning feeling refreshed and happy. She went to look in on Lucious and he was sound asleep. She stumbled in her flannel pajamas into the kitchen. Turned on a small lamp and stood next to her large kitchen windows. She looked outside and just stared into the distance. So much had happened, so many horrible dark creatures, turmoil around every corner. Melanie needed a break, she needed peace, and then the doorbell rang. She hit the buzzer. It was Ryan. She buzzed him in. She went to the front hall mirror and fixed her hair some. She was a mess. He arrived at the door at an alarming speed. She opened the door intent on playing it cool, but she hugged him there in the hall. She knew she missed him and her heart was in trouble.

Ryan came in and Melanie could not read him. She asked if he wanted some pancakes or coffee. He just nodded, she handed him a cup of coffee and turned to go into the kitchen to make pancakes. He caught her arm and said, “I need to tell you something.” She tried to remain composed but he could see the worry in her eyes, he told her “just come sit so we can talk.” He stuttered and stammered, not sure where to begin. He said, “well um ok see the thing is.” She jumped in with “if you want to break up with me you need not show up to do so.” He looked stunned. He was quick to respond with “No no that is not it at all.” Then he stammered more and Melanie told him to spit it out. He looked hurt. He finally said, “I know you are a witch!” Now it was Melanie who looked stunned.

Ryan and Melanie talked till Lucious woke up. He ran right to his mom, stopped short, and hugged Ryan instead. Ryan hugged him and then winked at him saying “Hey buddy how have you been?” Lucious shrugged his shoulders. So much had taken place and her little one was feeling it. Ryan tried to cheer him up with a “How about a day at the zoo with your mom and me today?” Lucious bounced around the living room screaming for joy. He bolted to his room to get ready without saying another word. Melanie was not happy, now she had to spend a day with Ryan. Ryan could see her trepidation and tried to assure her he was not trying to trap her into a day with him, but he needed to tell her more. Melanie was on the edge of her seat ready to show him the door the second he told her any bad news. He said “Well the thing is, I am ok with you being a witch. My mom was a close friend of Penelope’s and a witch herself.” Melanie looked stunned. She could not get air. She had no idea, but she didn’t tell him she was a witch either. She looked puzzled at him and asked: “Are you a witch?” He assured her it skipped him, but he wanted Melanie to know about his past with magic. He told her he was just hurt she did not trust him with the information, but it took him some time talking to Penelope for him to realize it did not change how he felt. He was falling in love with Melanie, her son, and her mother and wanted to be around the whole crew. He wanted them all in his life.

She said the zoo sounded nice but was cautious about it all. She made both of her fellas’ pancakes and got into the shower. When she came out of the shower all shiny and clean, she saw them snuggled together on the winged back chair telling stories to each other. She caught her breath in her throat and had to clear it and they saw her. They both whistled at her. She blushed. She was going to clean up first, but the kitchen was spotless. She looked at them, Lucious said he did the cleaning, and Ryan winked at Melanie this time. As they were going to the door, the stupid crazy rattling birdcage started squawking. What in the hell Melanie thought, not now! Melanie cautiously removed the sheet and jumped back ready to be attacked. The birdcage had one simple piece of paper in it again. Melanie moved slowly toward the cage. She looked at Lucious who ran to it without hesitation and removed it before his mom could even say “NO!” and he handed it to her. She looked suspiciously at it. It held one name: Edyln. The last time it told her a single name Lucious was born. She told Ryan this. Ryan was grinning ear to ear. Melanie was not pregnant but knew she would be again soon. Ryan was thrilled and said we will have to work on that. Melanie blushed and went to get her volume of Norse names down. Edyln means graceful and noble. Hmm perhaps she will be raising a queen, doubtful, but a baby girl would be such a blessing.
Ryan covered the birdcage up and whispered to it “Thank you” it seemed to nuzzle him and went back to sleep. Melanie wondered about that stupid birdcage. Legend has it that it was for wishes. She was yet to place one in it, but it kept giving her names. She had wanted a baby girl too, but with no man on the horizon, she thought it would never happen. Ryan and Melanie smiled at each other. One day they were going to make someone who was magical. They had only been on a few dates, but the birdcage told them it was going to work out. They gathered up Lucious and tried to explain to him what the name meant, a new baby would be on the way sometime, and he was not happy. He liked being Melanie’s only child. Melanie began to think she would need to move. She loved this place, it had all her dead fiancé’s things still in it, but maybe it was time. Perhaps Ryan and whenever this baby came, would be the catalyst to move her forward in life, Melanie did not know what the future holds, but right now they were going on another family date and Ryan knew her life, now she needed to tell him about Lucious, but she had a feeling he knew that too and just did not want to seem intrusive into their little hive. He was a great guy and Melanie hoped in the future he would not let her down. She needed one man to actually not let her down. Ryan grabbed her quick as they were heading out, Lucious was bounding down the stairs, and Ryan held her and kissed her passionately on the lips. Her legs tingled and she knew he was the one, but she would not say it out loud.
