Chapter 35 A Baby Arrives and a Sad Goodbye

Chapter 35 A Baby & A Goodbye

Within a few days of the doctor leaving town Melanie went into labor. The pain started like her first child, but soon her insides were feeling like they were being shredded from the inside out. This baby was doing something to her and she could not stop it. She did not feel magic, so she was not sure, but the labor was difficult. The baby had turned and Ryan had to call the doctor and she had to talk him through how he needed to wash up quickly to how he would have to reach into his wife and turn the baby. Ryan was freaked out yelling at the doctor on the phone, “I cannot do that, I didn’t go to medical school, I cannot just reach into her like that!” The doctor said in a level voice, “Ryan focus on my voice, follow my directions, breath, relax, I am right here and we will do it together.

Melanie screamed out in pain. She was thankful her friend in town who had watched Lucious before had him again. She did not want him hear from this. He had gone with her on a trip to a historic landmark in north Ireland and they would not be back till the day after next. She would have a little baby sister to present him upon his return. Melanie screeched out in pain when Ryan struggled to turn the baby. After an hour he had succeeded. He fell to the floor in exhaustion. The doctor was on the phone yelling, “Ryan, Ryan, are you there, are you ok? What’s going on?” He told her the baby was turned and Melanie said she felt ready to push. The doctor kept instructing Ryan what to do, she was on her way back, but would not make it back in time to deliver the baby. Melanie felt a stabbing pain in her side and cried out. She struggled to push through the pain. Labor seemed to go on for hours and Melanie was ready to be done. It had been fourteen hours. Melanie felt a tear in her side. It seemed she was ripping from the inside out. The baby was clawing its way out of her. Melanie thought that cannot be right, it was just a little baby. Melanie pushed one last time and was about to quit when the baby’s head came out. She was done with one more good strong push. She would have a baby girl. The pain intensified when she pushed, so she bellowed out again in pain and the Edyln came out straight into her daddy’s arms. She was home! Melanie wanted to hold her. Ryan was listening to the doctor about what now had to happen. He gave the baby to Melanie to hold and went back down to her legs where a pool of blood was now gathering on the floor. The doctor told him not to focus on that, but he was yelling now saying, “It’s gushing out all over the floor and making a pool of blood.” Melanie’s arms went limb and Ryan had to dash to catch the baby. He said. “Melanie! Melanie! Honey wake up! Come on honey!!” Melanie looked at him with such love in her eyes and within a second she was gone. Ryan was stunned. The doctor arrived within another fifteen minutes. She knew Melanie had bled out, but from what. She had a few issues but nothing that would have caused this. The doctor tried to console Ryan and Edyln. She inquired as to where Lucious was and was told with a family friend. The doctor made a call and within twenty minutes two men had arrived with an ambulance. They cleaned Melanie’s body, they cleaned the pooled blood, and they carried Melanie off to the morgue. The doctor told a dumbfounded Ryan that she would be in touch once she knew how Melanie died. Baby Edyln appeared healthy, so the doctor left her in her dads care. Edyln and Ryan fell the floor together and cried till they made their own pool, this time it was of tears.

Lucious came home the next day and ran right to his sister. He was enthralled with jubilance for his baby sister. He cooed at her, kissed her, and tickled her toes. He told Ryan that she looked all pink. He bounced around yelling, “I am a big brother” over and over. Ryan sad eyes looked at Lucious and Lucious stopped flouncing around the room. Lucious knew something was wrong. He ran to his mother’s room and she was not there. Griffin was curled up on the bed and Lucious said “Hello friend” and pet his kitty. Ryan came into the room and sat Lucious up on the bed. He would have to tell him what happened to his mother one day, but for now he just needed to let the child know that she lost her life in the battle to have baby Edyln. He would leave out the screaming, pain, blood, and any other details that would horrify poor Lucious. Lucious and Edyln were now Ryan’s responsibility and he would have to treat lightly on how he told Lucious about his mother. He started slowly about the doctor being out of town and that his mom went into labor. He said he had done everything he could for her and Lucious know he did. They sat and talked and Lucious knew at the age of five that he had lost both his father and now his mother and he would have to protect the family. He cried when Ryan told him that his mother was gone. He sobbed and sobbed onto Ryan’s shirt until it was soaked with tears. Ryan had shed so many since Melanie died. Lucious had never known his dad, but that did not make the pain of losing him any less devastating as he grew up. Lucious collapsed to the floor in his own puddle of tears. He cried for not being able to say goodbye to his mom. He cried for never having a complete family at one time. He struggled with the fact that he was not there when his mother gave birth and not there when she died. Lucious did not know what was going to happen in life, but he went to Edyln and kissed her. He told her about their mother and how amazing she was. He told her about battles she fought in her life. He walked around rocking his baby sister and singing to her through his tears. His heart broke, he was only five, but he seemed to have lived enough already for a lifetime.

And just like that a life is lost. So sad.
